A comprehensive brand naming process to find memorable, meaningful, and trademarkable brand names.
We find memorable names aligned with your brand strategy.
Naming your company or product is one of the most difficult and important aspects of your branding. Your name must be memorable, aligned with your brand strategy, and protectable with a trademark. Whether you're a startup looking for a catchy name or an established company looking to rebrand, our brand strategy led naming process is designed to find the best names for your business.
We'll first discuss your purpose, vision, and target audience. Together we'll complete a 1-week brand strategy sprint to clarify key areas before we begin the naming process. We'll research your competitors and industry to understand what's out there. Then we'll come up with hundreds of names that we'll narrow down to only the best.
All names presented are pre-screened for trademark conflicts, negative connotations, domain and social availability, and negative search results. We provide advice on domains and social media handles. If the ".com" of your business is not available, we will suggest alternative domains.
We'll help you understand why each name presented is a good fit for your company or product. This is a collaborative process with your decision makers, and we'll work with you through the process until we have three good name options that have been pre-screened and presented with the rationale of why each is a good fit for your brand.
We’ll meet with your team to discuss your business. Then we’ll complete a 1-week brand strategy workshop to define your brand and establish a naming brief to guide the process.
We do extensive market research and brainstorming to discover potential names. Naming is a minefield of legal, brand, and marketing issues that must be navigated correctly to find good names.
Once a large list of names has been made, then prescreening is done to eliminate names with issues and to draw out the stronger names.
We’ll present a list of 5-10 names in a video presentation. The feedback we receive from this first presentation will lead to more refined name options in our second presentation.
We’ll present new names that take into account feedback from our first presentation. Then we’ll provide guidance on what names are a good fit for your brand based on alignment with your brand strategy and naming brief.
We’ll send over the agreed upon name options and our prescreening data. Then your IP lawyer can perform a full trademark review before you make your final decision. We’ll provide guidance on domain options and social media handles.
A good name is short, easy to hear/say/spell, captures an aspect of your brand, aesthetically beautiful, and can be registered as a trademarked.
Descriptive names suggest what the business is about or include specific keywords related to the business.
Repurposed names utilize words unrelated to your business to build an identity around them.
Made-up names are entirely new words that sometimes relate back to a product feature, emotion, personality, or visual style.
Suggestive names try to convey a story, purpose, or aspect of the brand. These are often word compounds made by blending words together.
If the full name is too long, then an acronym can be used to create a shorter visual design or to combine a list of founders' names into a shorter name.
Alphanumeric names usually convey some aspect of the brand’s technology, story, or history.

Naming takes around 6-8 weeks to complete. It may take longer with large companies that have more decision makers involved. Time is an important part of the naming process. Time between meetings and past ideas allow new ideas to form and new perspectives to shape our understanding of what is best aligned with your long-term vision and brand strategy.
There is a high chance that your brand name will not be available as a ".com", but often the exact .com is available for purchase from the owner. Expect to pay around $3000-$6000 USD for most domains. We often can purchase a modified ".com" version of your company name by adding a keyword or an expression at the beginning or end of the domain name.
We will find examine hundreds of name in our process and find three potential brand names with your approval. You will have your IP lawyer perform a full trademark search and review on these names, and from their findings you will make your final decision based upon what names can likely be registered as trademark.
We are not a licensed law firm, but we can recommend law firms that can perform a comprehensive trademark search and register your name.
